Breast Screening returns to the Gorton community

The mobile Breast Screening Unit has returned to the Gorton community and until the end of April 2012.

Back in April 2009 over 600 hundred Gorton women shared their personal experiences of attending their breast screening appointments with NHS Manchester. Over 68% of women told us that the location of the breast screening van was a problem and that transport links were not good.

So, having listened to these experiences and working with the Greater Manchester Breast Screening service and Tesco Extra, the mobile Breast Screening Unit has returned to the Gorton community and, until the end of April 2012, is located in the car park of Tesco Extra, off Hyde Road.

Sue Longdon, Public Health Consultant said: “This is great news for local women. We’ve asked lots of you about your experience of breast screening and we know that many local women found it difficult to get to the screening unit when it was based outside of Gorton three years ago. Now, it couldn’t be easier to get to, so please ensure that you take the time to attend your appointment for breast screening.”

If you are of eligible age (which is now between the ages of 47 and 73) and a patient at one of the following practices: Five Oaks Family Practice, Gorton Medical Centre, Mount Road, West Gorton Medical Centre, Reddish Lane, Gorton Clinic and Capital Road, you will receive an invitation to be screened.

Some women who live in Manchester and who are registered at the following practices in the NHS Tameside & Glossop area will also be invited to attend screening: Park View Group Practice, Heaton Norris Health Centre, South Reddish Clinic, Houldsworth Surgery, Fulmar Road Surgery and 306 Gorton Road.

If you receive an invitation letter and cannot make the appointment time, just call the Nightingale Centre on 0161 291 4444 and ask to change it. You can also request a new appointment by going online to the Greater Manchester Breast Screening Programme website:
www.breast-screening.uhsm.nhs.uk

If you are over 70 and have not been screened for over 3 years you are also welcome to telephone 0161 291 4444 and request an appointment.

If you would like to share your experiences of breast screening in Manchester, please email: talkinghealth@manchester.nhs.uk, telephone 0161 765 4168 or text 07813 209 775.
