Personal Health Budgets Pilot

Personal Health Budgets Pilot - NHS Manchester

NHS Manchester has been chosen by the Department of Health as one of the twenty evaluation sites to pilot Personal Health Budgets across the country.

A recent statement from Andrew Lansley, Health Secretary, supports the future of Personal Health Budgets:

Personal health budgets clearly fit with the future direction of a modern NHS - an NHS  which focuses on quality and gives patients more control and choice. They allow people to work with the NHS so that they can receive more personal, more tailored care which fit with an individual’s life and uses resources most effectively. This is a solution which must come as part of a cultural shift for doctors, healthcare professionals, providers and patients which sees the patient as an equal partner in decisions about their care. It will personalise the NHS and provide more integrated high quality care across health and social care.”

What is a Personal Health Budget?

”A Personal Health Budget makes it clear to someone getting support from the NHS, and the people who support them, how much money is available for their care and lets them agree the best way to spend it.”

What is happening in Manchester?

The Manchester pilot will work with patients who need support with continuing healthcare. The aim of the pilot is to see if personal health budgets can:

• Help patients have more choice in their own care; and

• Increase the quality of care that is given.

A full evaluation study of the pilot is being conducted by the University of Kent.  The results of the study will be used to inform how personal health budgets will be provided in the future.

There are now over 40 continuing healthcare patients in Manchester who have opted for a Personal Health Budget.

Every patient involved in the pilot will complete a personalised support plan.
